Our busy lifestyles cause our nervous systems to be constantly inundated with external stimuli which over stimulates our emotions. Unbeknownst to us, violent movies and television shows, loud music, and a few other forms of “recreation”, over stimulate our nervous systems and cause a variety of stress related symptoms. Excessive overstimulation, when combined with anger and frustration, leads to anxiety, of which you sometimes may not be consciously aware. The cumulative effect of unresolved stress can cause an increase in heart rate, increase in blood pressure, tension headaches, tense muscles, irritability, sleep disorders and a wide range of other symptoms.
I am sure that we all have experienced days when we feel totally exhausted, and completing even the simplest task becomes a chore. You may have had a difficult day at work, or got into an argument with someone, and you unconsciously carry these negative emotions around with you. Once you get home, instead of relaxing, your children, spouse, and household chores all compete for your attention until you eventually are drained of all your energy.
I am not suggesting that all days leave you tired to the point of exhaustion. There may be days where you are fortunate enough to have a balance between work and relaxation. This leaves you feeling satisfied, and in turn, feeling more energized and motivated. We all wish we had more days where we are balanced than when we are out of balance.
But it is important to realise that when you reach a state of exhaustion, your ability to cope with new stressors is drastically reduced, and this can negatively impact all areas of your life. If a significant percentage of your days leave you feeling worn out and tired, then you are certainly out of balance, and it is time to take a good, honest look and evaluate your lifestyle. Instead of becoming overwhelmed with your tasks, try to prioritize that which requires your immediate attention, and let go of less important matters.
