As promised in my previous blog, I will try to simplify the basic structure of the brain and nervous system, and focus on how it works.
Think of the nervous system as being made up of a complex network of billions of microscopic cells called neurons. The neurons connect with each other to form neural pathways that bundle together to carry messages back and forth from your external environment to your brain, via your spinal column. These nerves are like tiny wires that transmit electrical impulses, very much like wires in a telephone exchange.
Western Science focuses on the anatomy, physiology, and physical aspects of our nervous systems. Our nervous systems are made up of the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system, which consists of the brain and spinal cord, is housed in the skull and spinal column.
The peripheral nervous system, which lies outside of the skull and spinal cord, connects the central nervous system to our limbs and organs so we can function.
